Fee-Free Training and Student Support for Key Industries
With Labor returning to government following a decisive win in the 2025 federal election, business owners across Australia are watching closely to see how new policies will affect their day-to-day operations and long-term planning.
From energy rebates to student debt relief and skills training, the Albanese government has outlined a broad agenda aimed at easing pressure on households while supporting economic growth, which will directly or indirectly affect local businesses.
New Tax Breaks and Cost Relief for Local Business Owners
One of the headline announcements from the Labor government is the introduction of a $1,000 instant tax deduction for work-related expenses. This measure is expected to benefit business operators by simplifying claims and providing more immediate cash flow support.
Additionally, a two-year freeze on the beer excise tax will bring some relief to hospitality venues and small breweries, helping them maintain stable prices amid rising operating costs.
Housing Investment Could Mean More Work for Tradies
A key focus of Labor’s re-election platform is housing affordability and supply. The government has pledged:
- To invest $10 billion in constructing 100,000 new homes.
- To expand the Help to Buy scheme.
This is expected to stimulate the construction industry and generate significant opportunities for tradespeople, suppliers, real estate agents, and associated small businesses.
Power Bill Relief and Solar Support on the Horizon
To help with rising energy bills, Labor will continue providing a $150 electricity rebate to households. This might also offer some relief for people who run a business from home or work as sole traders.
In addition, a new subsidy program is being introduced to
support the installation of solar batteries. This could help small businesses lower their running costs, improve energy efficiency, and better cope during power outages.
Better Healthcare Access Could Boost Workforce Productivity
The Albanese government plans to invest
$8.5 billion in Medicare, with a goal to bulk-bill 90% of GP visits by 2030. While this is aimed at individuals, employers may see benefits through a healthier and more productive workforce.
Fee-Free Training and Student Support for Key Industries
To help address persistent skills shortages, Labor is expanding its fee-free TAFE initiative from 2027, targeting priority sectors like:
- Construction
- Aged care
- Hospitality
- Digital services
In addition, starting July 2025, eligible students in teaching, nursing and midwifery, or social work placements can receive $331.65 per week through the Commonwealth Prac Placement program. This support may help reduce financial strain on small service businesses that host or train student workers.
What Lies Ahead
With a majority in the House of Representatives, Labor is in a good position to move forward with its plans for a second term. That said, some changes may still need support from the Senate and crossbench members.
For small businesses in Australia, the coming months will be important for seeing how these policies take shape and what kinds of support might become available.
