SEO and GEO aren't rivals. Here's what generative engine optimisation means for Australian SMBs, and why your website still matters most.

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a plumber in your area and it'll give you one. Ask it for the best café near your office and it'll name a few. Somewhere behind the scenes, a business either got mentioned or it didn't.

That's the world GEO, generative engine optimisation, is built for. It sounds like a new discipline replacing SEO, but it isn't. Think of it less as a rival to your website and search rankings, and more as the next layer built on top of them. Your website is still the foundation everything else stands on. GEO is just about making sure AI tools notice it too.

Here's what GEO means, how it relates to the SEO work you might already be doing, and what it means for a local Australian business right now.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It's the practice of structuring your content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can find it, understand it and cite it when someone asks a question.

This isn't a buzzword someone made up to sound clever. Researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech and IIT Delhi ran real tests in 2024 to find out what really makes AI tools cite one page over another. The pages that got picked used clear stats, quoted trustworthy sources and were written with confidence, and that lifted their chances of being cited by up to 40%.

That's not a vague promise. It's a measurable result backed by real testing. The practices behind it, using credible sources, real data and clear writing, are the same principles that have helped SEO succeed for years.

The real difference between SEO and GEO

SEO gets you found on Google. It's built around ranking web pages for search terms, using keywords, backlinks, page speed and structure to earn a spot in the results.

GEO is about a different moment. Instead of showing someone a list of links to choose from, an AI tool reads across multiple sources, works out what's accurate and trustworthy, and gives a single synthesised answer.

Sometimes it names a business directly. Sometimes it doesn't mention any source at all.

The two aren't in competition. AI tools still rely heavily on the same signals Google has always used: a clear, well-structured website, consistent business information and genuine reviews. GEO doesn't ask you to throw any of that out. It asks you to make sure it's strong enough to be worth citing.

Why your website still matters most

It's easy to hear “AI search” and assume your website is becoming less important. It's the opposite.

AI tools need reliable sources to answer users' questions. A page that clearly explains topics like “How much does it cost to reblock a house in Perth?” or “What's included in an end of lease clean?” gives AI systems useful information they can reference in their responses. A thin, vague or outdated website offers little value, making it more likely the AI will rely on a competitor's content instead.

Your website isn't competing with GEO. It's the raw material GEO runs on. Every improvement made there, clearer service pages, honest pricing guidance, real answers to real customer questions, helps you on Google and in AI tools at the same time.

What separates the businesses that get cited

The Princeton research backs up what we're seeing across Australian small business websites every day. A handful of things make the real difference:

  • Content quality over titles. A page titled “Gutter Cleaning Perth” is still good for SEO. The title itself isn't the issue. What matters is whether the content genuinely answers the questions customers are asking, such as how often gutters need cleaning in Perth's climate, in enough depth and clarity for an AI tool to trust it as a reliable source.
  • Real numbers and named sources. Claims backed by real data carry far more weight than vague, generic statements. AI tools are drawn to content that reads as credible and specific.
  • Consistency everywhere. Your business name, address, phone number and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile and every online directory. Google has always used these signals to verify business information, and AI tools do the same.
  • Genuine, current reviews. Fresh, authentic reviews help customers make decisions and give AI tools more confidence in recommending your business.

What this means for your business

SEO was never a set-and-forget job, and GEO isn't either. A website, Google Business Profile and online listings only stay effective if someone's actively keeping them up to date.

What's changed is that the work now serves 2 audiences at once, a person scrolling Google and an AI tool trying to decide who to mention. That's a real opportunity, but it also means the businesses getting the basics right consistently, not just once, are the ones pulling ahead.

SEO isn't dead, search is just evolving

GEO isn't a reason to rethink your website.

While the way people search is changing, the fundamentals haven't. Businesses that create helpful content, keep their information accurate and build trust online are the ones most likely to be found, whether customers are searching on Google or asking an AI assistant.
